SA budget 2009: relief for consumers

Wise policies followed by the government during 'the good times' allowed Trevor Manuel, minister of finance, to offer support to South Africans and help boost the economy with an expansionary budget.

Lower interest rates, tax relief and increased social grants are some of the ways the government is trying to help consumers and the economy. You can read a summary of the 2009 budget in the attached local economic review.

Liberty's financial position: looking after your wealth

On 26 February 2009, Liberty Holdings announced better-than-expected financial results for 2008, despite the challenge of doing business in difficult market conditions. Liberty's capital adequacy - the amount of capital we must have, by law, to back the policies on our books - is 2.7 times the legal requirement, compared to 2.0 times in 2007. This is the strongest level of protection given to policyholders since 2002, giving you further peace of mind in these tough economic times that your money is invested with a prudent, well-managed company.

Your budget 2009: plan and gain

In his budget speech, Trevor Manuel urged South Africans to develop sound saving habits, because, "our development expenditure over the period ahead will require both improved domestic saving and continued capital flows."
