Economic figures for the US are surprisingly on the upside, with gross domestic product (GDP) rising
to 3.5% in the third quarter. This further cements the argument that the global economy is on the road
to recovery; however, there are potential roadblocks ahead and it is not quite time to bring out the
champagne. South Africa's recovery remains in doubt especially after the shocking unemployment figures
which show that nearly 1 million South Africans have lost their jobs this year so far. Read how consumers
both locally and in the US are faring in our
global and
local economic reviews.

Most of us work hard and struggle to find a balance between family life and our careers.
One thing that gives us comfort when we miss our child's school play or swimming gala is
that our hard work will allow us to build up a financial nest egg to pay for our children's
education, buy them their first car or even help them with a deposit for their first home.
Because life doesn't always go according to plan, we need to make sure that we have our affairs
in order so that our loved ones are taken care of even if we are no longer around to provide for
them. In the article A Focus on Estate Planning we look at the areas you need to consider in your
financial plan to ensure that your dependants are taken care of and that your wishes are carried out.
When you have your own business there are additional factors that you need to consider to protect
your family. You can read about these in Estate Planning and Your Business.
And finally, in the article When to Consider a Trust Geraldine Macpherson, senior legal adviser at
Liberty Group Advisory Services, debates the pros and cons of creating a trust and whether a trust
is the most appropriate estate planning vehicle for your needs.
