We may see more convincing signs of a global economic recovery before year-end with positive growth from most major economies. However this recovery is still very fragile and growth rates are expected to remain fairly weak for the next few years. It is important that we keep a close look at how the recovery is unfolding.

You can read a review of how the global and local economies are faring and track the Stanlib Global Economic Recovery Monitor which provides clear signs of which way the global economies are headed.

In this edition we look at how South Africans are coping with the economic recession. Economic data shows that the debt burden is taking its toll (see our local economic article Households feel the pressure), and the recession is hurting households both financially and emotionally. In the article Let's Talk About Money we discuss research findings which confirm that households are in dire straits, but which also reveals the positive aspects of how people rise to a challenge and use it as an opportunity for change. A key finding is that people are talking more to their families about their financial situation.

The article Why we don't save is the first part of a two month theme where we look at some of the economic and behavioural reasons why South Africans are among the lowest savers in the world. When we understand why we behave in a certain way, then we can identify ways in which we can address this behaviour.

In order to keep you abreast of the legal and tax changes that will affect your financial planning we provide regular articles of interest. In the article Deferring Estate Duty we look at pending changes to the Estate Duty Act.
