Disruption in the Middle East, the earthquake in Japan and high oil prices in the coming months could
have serious consequences for global economic growth and inflation.
Locally, our economists are focusing on our growth figures and early indications are that we should
see relatively positive economic figures for the first quarter of this year. We urgently need to increase
our rate of growth if we are to reduce our unsustainably high levels of unemployment. So far, inflation
is being kept under control by a relatively strong rand, but we will not be immune to continued oil price
hikes and the rand's volatility makes us vulnerable to inflation risks.

local and
global economic reviews.

I hope all our mothers out there had a great Mother's Day on 8 May. It's a time for us to
recognise the important role mothers play in creating the fabric of our society.
Being a good mom or dad is not just about good parenting, it is also about ensuring that we are able
to provide for our children financially.
As education costs continue to rise above our salary increases, provision for education is becoming
an economic imperative. In the article
Saving for your child's education we
look at the costs of education and how an education plan can be used effectively to supplement school fees.
This month we also share the experience of one of our staff members and Liberty policyholders who
recently became a mom. Her story,
The financial reality of becoming a parent, reminds
us of the importance of planning and how even with the best laid plans, life can take a completely different course.
