South Africa's inclusion in the BRICS forum creates important opportunities for both the country and the
continent. By 2015, the combined output of the BRICS countries is expected to exceed that of the United
States, with the total value of their gross domestic product (GDP) accounting for more than 22% of the
world's total.
Recent economic data shows South Africa's economy has grown strongly. Consumer spending is picking up,
suggesting that consumers are feeling more optimistic. However, consumer debt levels remain a concern
especially as we move towards a higher interest rate environment. Manufacturing activity is positive
but sustained growth for our manufactured exports rely on the strong growth of the economies of our
global trading partners.
